Volunteers are needed during the nesting season to survey the beach for house lights that may deter female turtles from nesting, or cause them to nest close to the water.

As the season progresses, volunteers are needed to survey for house lights that may cause hatchlings to disorient and crawl away from the safety of the water.

Most surveys are conducted at night, but it's also easy to see and photograph house lights before dawn. One could assume that if the lights are on early in the morning, they were left on all night long, endangering hatchlings and discouraging nesting females.

For millions of years, sea turtles nested on dark, quiet, empty beaches. Artificial lights shining on our beaches are considered a loss of suitable nesting habitat, further speeding sea turtles toward extinction.
